Choreographers Elizabeth Clendinning, Janice Lancaster, and Monet Beatty return to SECCA for an evening of dance and music. More info here.
I’m porously directing a structured improvisation titled, The heels have ears. With dancers Kira Blazek Ziaii, Shelby Coon, Bekah Downing, Faith Fidgeon, Taryn Griggs, and Kendell Ramirez and musicians Matt Kendrick on bass, Kassem Williams on drums, Michael Kinchen on saxophone.
This structured improvisation announces itself as dancers and musicians contribute to its performance. The exchange explores how a listening response between musicians and dancers can render a sense of place that both utilizes and ruptures conventions of a proscenium space. The improvisatory structure puts the interdisciplinary question on a real-time display. Both dancers and musicians offer propositions and worlds — actual and imagined — as replies, findings, and losses are already in motion.
Special thanks to Christina Soriano and the WFU Interdisciplinary Arts Center for supporting this event. Additional support through the generous backing of ArtsGreensboro, Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County, the North Carolina Arts Council, and the Dance Project 2022-23 Artists in Residence program.
